D is for DARE!
September - December 2017
I had a spell with absolutely nothing on, so I needed to get out of the house. Having recently given them some technical/lighting advice, I caught up with Restless Natives in The Gairie Inn, Kirriemuir.
Chamber East Wedding
Another wedding at Chamber East, but no early finish because of a brawl this time.
Shed of the Dead
I was invited to a friend’s Halloween Party, so I offered to bring some lights along.
In addition to the off-the-shelf lights used for mood, I custom-made some USB battery-operated stem/strand lights especially for the event. These were inserted into the garden and powered from USB battery banks, charged up at intervals from banks of phone chargers.
City Quay Disco
DJ Ross and I were booked for a wedding disco in the City Quay Function Suite. I was rushing between it and a DD8 Music gig: the Round Table fireworks up the hill at Camera Obscura.
Rhumba & Neon
This was a busy day with lots of load-ins, setups and load-outs for audiowave PA hire. We did systems for The Rhumba Club at The Ice Factory Perth and the Neon Digital Arts Festival in Dundee. The Bitcoin Fairy performance from Plastique Fantastique gave me nightmares. I loved the exhibit using 9 CRT TVs and Toshiba screen-splitting hardware.
More guaranteed work, less stress, more fun - and a new spotlight, what else could I ask for? Charles Denton’s dance routines as his character LaPoo? I did miss working with John Binnie and other familiar faces this year however.
I was follow-spotting for the Webster Theatre’s production of Beauty and the Beast, and helping with the odd thing backstage, including installing LEDs in props and fairy lights on a chandelier.
As tradition demanded, I decorated the green room with fairy lights.
I also got in on #PantoPlanking, making art out of the paint spills on the workshop floor and seeing faces where there were none.
Now at the end of 2017, and back where I started: Mains Castle, this time for DARE! Does Dundee with DJ Ross and friends.
My lighting programming has improved, but I’ve still a long way to go. I’d configured the lighting thus: 2 independent PAR cans on a slow rainbow wash with a sweeping master fader curve; 3 LED baton bars in full channel mode fed with a sine wave on the red channels, and multiple path nodes for the disco scans, lasers and my new mini LED moving heads.
Thanks to audiowave.co.uk for the PA hire.
One More Thing…
Once again, I lost Tom Scott’s The Pogues Game at the first hurdle, as I work in theatre at Xmas.
I’ve been listening to Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons, Deaf Havana, Mister T, Elton John, Black Label Society, DMA’s, Justin Bieber, Damian Marley, Azzido Da Bass, Foster The People, Congo Natty, Dual Core, Saxon, Dire Straits, Underworld, The Spill Canvas & Fatboy Slim.
