(Could Make A Man Of You)
Oct - Dec 2018
With the best will in the world, I’m writing this - yet again - in retrospect of the fact. By about 6 months. Call it procrastination, call it work/health/life getting in the way, call it whatever you want.
Dundee Wedding Discos
Two Discos in one weekend - easier written than done. First off, we had a disco in Monifieth Golf Club - and I wish I’d taken less stuff, because there was only room for one T-bar. I used 7 PARcans, a moonflower-orbiter and some LED bars on the floor. The system was transplanted into Q Bar/The Queens Hotel in Dundee for a wedding reception the following evening. The subs and amps were supplied by AudioWave.
AML were booked by Ally Bally Productions to supply and setup a PA system (courtesy of audiowave), radio mics, cameras, video mixing and projection, LED up-lighters, LED dance floor, LED star cloths and stage lighting - all for the Scottish Car of the Year Awards. SPOILER: The Jaguar I-Pace won.
I had as much fun cleaning and laying the LED floor as I did re-cleaning it after the Jag had a rehearsal entrance.
Safe Drive, Stay Alive 2018
When I was at college studying binaural and immersive audio (amongst other things) and its uses as haptic feedback and sensory information; I half-joked that we should use some such implementation to scare wannabe boy-racer shits into not driving like dicks (having been run over by one myself). Part of this roadshow did exactly that - with film clips showing dramatised accidents to would-be drivers, amplified by a powerful Meyer PA system, provided by Apex Acoustics. AML were of course on-hand to provide lighting and AV production services.
I don’t mind admitting the whole experience made me feel horrible - because of the content of the show and the harrowing accounts of the guest speakers. I got speaking to my local pub-after-work barman about the experience, who told me his son had been to one of the shows that day - and had also been affected by the content of the show.
“It’s better to arrive late than dead on time. Safe Drive, Stay Alive.”
Wellgate Xmas Lights & DUSA Repairs
In other news, I’ve been helping setup an Xmas display PA system in the Wellgate shopping centre in Dundee, repairing a Martin Rush MH3 moving head and then testing it by cooking lunch with it. The George Foreman cooks from the bottom side-up and the Martin Rush cooks from the top.
Stolen Ford Transit Van
We heard news that audiowave had had their van stolen in Partick, Glasgow. I’ve come to realise how useless the police (as an institution as a whole) are; we were previously told that the UK gang targeting hire companies and stealing Pioneer DJ decks “wasn’t a criminal offence” - rather a civil dispute. Can someone tell me why, with all our CCTV and average speed cameras that track license plates; why can’t the existing network be used to track stolen vehicles?
Registration/License: YT12 XSZ.
We also had a Jakey sniffing round our yard. He arrived by bike and his story was that his “motor had broken down” and was looking for a garage. Does anyone recognise him?
Live Music & Pubs
I’ve been following Headroom (in a non-stalky way) all over Dundee and Angus, trying random pubs in Tayport and Glenrothes - and I’ve now found a new pub for after work; Bergies in Bell Street. The lease on my old after-work pub expired - the new landlord seems hell-bent on running the place into the ground.
Dundee Square Gig
I had another gig with audiowave in the square outside the Caird Hall with Lefty and Friends. I noticed a stray cable plugged into my lighting power, and tracing it back located it to an electric blanket that one of the band was sitting on. We had a pesky PARcan that kept blowing fuses, but sods law when I got it back to the workshop - I could not replicate the fault.
DD8 Music Fireworks & Xmas Lights
More DD8 Music, firstly up Kirriemuir Hill for Bonfire Night; then in the town center for the Xmas Lights Switch-on. Spot the mistake in the lighting display.
This years production was Aladdin. We had this weird platform contraption to fly the cast out over the audience - it was a pain to put together (supplied minus assembly instructions, missing a few components and having been stored in a cow shed for the past however many months). Both cast and crew started asking me when I was going to decorate the green room as per tradition - so I didn’t disappoint with the usual multiple sets of white LED strings; and new for this year: USB-powered icicle lights and aqua lights in the corridor.
Asian Wedding with AML
AML were asked to install lighting for an Asian wedding celebration in Dundee. We supplied an LED fairy light-wall and LED floodlighting for the happy couple.
Just when I thought I’d have a quiet end to the year, I was asked to supply some lighting for a New Years party. I had a disco system inside the property, but forot to take pictures. D’oh.
After buying my lunch in Lidl one day, I slipped in their car park where the surface hadn’t been maintained, thus spilling my lunch everywhere. I contacted their customer service rep who told me they “would have to investigate with head office” - ?!? How about check your CCTV to see I’m not lying, then refund me a pot of soup and two rolls?
One More Thing…
As part of my work with AML, I was asked to service a dimmer-pack for the drama dept of a local high school; I did so - replacing several triacs and generally cleaning it up. The school in question burned down 3 weeks later (unrelated cause). I later learned that the drama building wasn’t harmed by the fire.
