The Dregs of 2020
Oct - Dec 2020
My local councillor still hasn’t found the time to reply to me. There was me thinking he was elected to serve local people.
Jojoba the waterproof Bunny
I decided to solder another of my Jojoba Bunny PCBs, this time installed into a gutted waterproof LED floodlight. It’s almost as if it were made for this enclosure. It’s surprisingly bright for the small amount of power it consumes.
We Make Events - the PCB build
This is what should have been the PCB for the #WeMakeEvents build. It consumes about 1 Watt of power on 240V mains AC. It is designed to run at low intensity - well suited for a production office or backstage.
So here we have the PCB assembled into the frame on my workbench, being modelled by moi (you’ll have to excuse the John Deere Onesie - it’s 4 Celsius in the workshop) and finding a home at the Park5 Studio in Dundee.
BCDC Gallium - US of A Style
I’ve been assembling more of Big Clive’s Gallium PCBs, partly because the soldering practice is always good, but mostly because I’m curious if I’ll ever get bored of them.
This time, I used flickering LEDs as I was trying to produce the effect of a flag gently rustling in the wind. I’m aware that there aren’t 50 stars on the flag, but as I only have a resolution of 18x13 “pixels” to work with, you’ll get the gist.
Normality. Sort of.
In the style of having a good Stevie and a bad Stevie - one on each shoulder - the bad one convinced me to go to the pub while I still could. The options were rather limited, as we were in Level 2 (I can’t remember) and so could only sit outside. In Dundee. In Winter. I took the opportunity anyway.
I have since been able to add Ferraris Bar into my Good Pub Guide. Hopefully all the pubs I like will survive lockdown.
Re-watching Foyles War and the stuff they went thru during WW2, at least they had pubs open.
BCDC Gallium RGB A4
Yet another BCDC (Big Clive Dot Com) Gallium PCB project. Still not bored of them.
I’ve been doing some good deeds, pressure washing all the moss and slime off of family members’ and neighbours driveways and paths.
It’s depressing that, at the time of writing this; a pressure washing video is getting more views than the technical videos I put much more effort into.
AudioWave was providing lighting for the Remembrance Ceremony in Carnoustie.
Custom Tendril Bulbs
I’ve been adding to my collection of custom tendril lightbulbs, made from recycled compact fluorescent lamp bases, LEDs, solid core wires and capacitive dropper power supply circuits.
I know it’s kinda smutty, but who wants to see my pink helmet?
I decided to celebrate Aspie Pride - with no idea whether it was actually the correct time or not, it’s 2020 after all - by what else: assembling some LED flower PCBs that I bought from Big Clive.
I have had a little work; I was doing some PAT Testing for an AV Hire company who were producing a socially-distanced show and needed their equipment tested and serviced.
Repairing a Pulse LED PARcan
What were you doing on Xmas Day? I was repairing a Pulse LED PARcan (and making a video about the process).
I like having a helpful Pet Tiger who likes helping with Xmas Lights. First he spies the colourful fairy lights. Then he moseys up to them. Then chaos ensues.
COVID-19 brings out the worst in people…

Also Tory voter: “the left should agree with us or have their furlough/benefits/websites/social media accounts removed!”
