“Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work”
“You get out what you put in”
“A clever person solves a problem.
A wise person avoids it”
“I’d rather be hated for who I am than be loved for who I am not”
“Don’t start to think you’re cool because that’s when things blow up”
“Work is more fun than fun”
“[It’s the music], not the drugs or the sex or the rock ‘n’ roll behaviour”
A few artists I like:
(In no particular order)
Since a young age, I have been in love with electricity, computers, lighting & music.
I enrolled at Perth College (UHI Millennium Institute) in 2007 to further my passion in sound & music. I actively retain my interest in computing, electronics and web programming - which to this day helps me with my sound engineering work. I am currently progressing with my BSc(Hons).
Roadie:
The best term for what I do would be a “Roadie” - although as Matt McGinn informs us, the word has earned itself some negative connotations of late. However, I really love the word because it encompasses everything I am and everything I do…
My skills and experience:
I’m very technologically minded & am confident using many DAW packages, operating systems and production techniques. I have had experience with crewing, system rigging & wiring, mains distribution, sound effects production, stage lighting, vision mixing, camera & projection work, special effects, live multitrack recording, location recording, mixing, logistics…
I now have several years experience of working with live music events - from local community shows to larger festival-size gigs with varying levels of responsibility.
My objectives:
I am looking for work placements to further the knowledge and skills that I have acquired thus far because I want to keep on learning. My main area of expertise is with live sound reinforcement - although I try not to restrict myself to one area.
I would ideally be looking to join a PA/stage lighting company as part of the tech crew in order to gain valuable experience in every eventuality from stadium gigs to conferences.
My work ethic:
I put 100% effort into what I do because this is something that I enjoy doing.
I would much rather work long arduous Roadie shifts than claim benefits and lie about all day watching daytime TV in my underpants…
I love working with music because it is more than an interest, more than a hobby, and far more than just a job.
It’s only Rock ‘n’ Roll… but I love it.
My rates:
I need to earn a living like anyone else.
My rates are very reasonable (and negotiable!).
To survive: I require expenses such as travel/accommodation, a pre-gig fish supper and a post-gig pint of Guinness*…
*A pint of JD would also be appreciated.
My philosophy:
Being a Roadie is the only thing I could ever do - as Lemmy Kilmister asserts: “Let’s face it, I’m not going to quit and become a brain surgeon or anything else”.
Piling on the quotes, Ozzy Osbourne once sang “I always knew what I wanted to be, I knew for sure, I know for sure”.
I love music - especially when combined with technology, lights, lots of speakers, special effects and enough juice to power a city…
As Noël Coward will tell us, “work is more fun than fun”.
There aren’t many people that can say that - and mean it.
I can.
I am where the back stage meets the sound stage, where Norman Cook meets Norman Candler, where Motörhead meets Justin Bieber - I prefer the journey over the destination.
I am Stevie C.
So why do this?
-- I love music.
Being a Roadie is more fun than fun…
